چکیده

Traditional photometric redshift methods use only color information about the objects in question to estimate their redshifts. This paper introduces a new method utilizing colors, luminosity, surface brightness, and radial light profile to measure the redshifts of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We take a statistical approach: distributions of galaxies from the SDSS Large-Scale Structure (LSS; spectroscopic) sample are constructed at a range of redshifts, and target galaxies are compared to these distributions. An adaptive mesh is implemented to increase the percentage of the parameter space populated by the LSS galaxies. We test the method on a subset of galaxies from the LSS sample, yielding rms ∆z of 0.025 for red galaxies and 0.030 for blue galaxies (all with z < 0.25). Additional tests and future improvements for this promising technique are suggested. Subject headings: galaxies: distances and redshifts — techniques: photometric — catalogs

Novel Methods for Predicting Photometric Redshifts from Broad Band Photometry using Virtual Sensors

We calculate photometric redshifts from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Main Galaxy Sample, The Galaxy Evolution Explorer All Sky Survey, and The Two Micron All Sky Survey using two new training–set methods. We utilize the broadband photometry from the three surveys alongside Sloan Digital Sky Survey measures of photometric quality and galaxy morphology. Our first training–set method draws from th...

A Galaxy Photometric Redshift Catalog for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data

We present and describe a catalog of galaxy photometric redshifts (photo-z’s) for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 6 (DR6). We use the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) technique to calculate photo-z’s and the Nearest Neighbor Error (NNE) method to estimate photo-z errors for ∼ 77 million objects classified as galaxies in DR6 with r < 22. The photo-z and photo-z error estimators a...

Estimating Photometric Redshifts Using Support Vector Machines

We present a new approach to obtaining photometric redshifts using a kernel learning technique called Support Vector Machines (SVMs). Unlike traditional spectral energy distribution fitting, this technique requires a large and representative training set. When one is available, however, it is likely to produce results that are comparable to the best obtained using template fitting and artificia...

Improving Photometric Redshifts Using Galaxy Evolution Explorer Observations for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82 and the next Generation of Optical and Sunyaev–zeldovich Cluster Surveys

Four large-area Sunyaev–Zeldovich (SZ) experiments—APEX-SZ, South Pole Telescope, Atacama Cosmology Telescope, and Planck—promise to detect clusters of galaxies through the distortion of cosmic microwave background photons by hot (>106 K) cluster gas (the SZ effect) over thousands of square degrees. A large observational follow-up effort to obtain redshifts for these SZ-detected clusters is und...
